College Student Job Interview Questions and Answers

Being interviewed as a college student or recent graduate can be challenging because you often don't have as much work experience as other job seekers. As a recent graduate you don't have as much interviewing experience as other candidates. However as a college student or recent graduate, you still have a lot to offer.

Types of College Student Job Interview Questions

There are certain interview questions category that each college student or recent graduate might be asked in an interview. Each category has several common college student job interview questions.

1. Behavioral Interview Questions

Behavioral interview questions require you to provide an example of a time when you did something work-related in the past. A lot of interview questions are based on behavioral interview questions. For example, your interviewer might ask you to tell them about a time you had to complete a school project under a tight deadline. Interviewers will like to know the employee you might be in the future, that's why they will ask you questions about your past.

These questions about your past require you to jog your memory and think of your past experiences. To answer these kind of questions use the STAR concept.

  • Situation - Describe the situation or context in which you faced a challenge at college or when performing a job.
  • Task - What was your task or responsibility at that situation? Describe that.
  • Action - Describe the action you took by explaining how you completed the task. Don't focus on what your team did rather than what you did.
  • Result - The outcome generated by the actions you took.

To prepare for a college interview using STAR method, first you have to make a list of the skills and/or experiences required by the job. Then consider specific examples of occasions when you displayed those skills. For each example, use the STAR. Each example you choose, make sure that it is closely related to the job you're being interviewed for as possible.

As a college student or recent graduate, you might not be having a lot of work experience, try to draw on your experiences as a university student, a volunteer, an intern or even if you participated in co-curricular activities.

Examples of Behavioral Interview Questions and Answers Using STAR

1. Tell me about a time you had to complete a group project within a tight deadline. Once at my former college, my group colleague left days before the imminent deadline of one of our assigned project. I had to assume responsibility for it, with only few days to learn about and complete the project. I split the assignment into bits and I completed the assignment with a day to spare. In fact, I believe I thrive when working under tight deadlines.

2. What do you do when a group project member refuses to complete or do their quota of the work? When there are group project conflict or issues. I always try my best to team up as a team leader if needed. I think my communication skills make me an effective moderator and leader. For example, one time, when I was working on a group project, two of my group mated got into an argument, both refusing to complete their assignments. So I rearranged the group and we reallocated all the assignments within team members and everyone was much happier and more productive.

3. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. How did you handle it?

4. Have you ever missed a deadline? Why did it happen?

Situational Interview Questions

Most situational interview questions will be about to consider a possible future situation at work. "How would you handle working on three tasks that are due at the same time?" These type of questions are answered with an example of a past experience even though they are about your future situations. By using an example, it will add credibility to your answer.

Examples that are closely related to the job you are applying for are the best. Think about your college experiences, volunteer work, past work or even when you were an intern.

Examples of Situational Interview Questions

  • How would you handle an argument with a team member?
  • How did you handle the biggest issue you've had at a past internship or job?
  • What would you do if you were working on a project with a tight deadline and you are running out of time?

Questions about You

Interviewers like to ask you about your personal questions so as to know you better in person. They will ask you about your education, character questions such as strength and weaknesses, your work history.

To be prepared for these kind of questions, go through your resume and cover letter thoroughly also go through on common interview questions about yourself. When answering, answer honestly, but always put a positive spin on your answers.

Questions about The Place

The interviewers or the employers might ask you as a college student questions about the company, and why you think you are a good fit for the position. Research about the company ahead of time to answer these question correctly.

Examples of Questions about the Place

  1. Describe your ideal boss - Never criticize a past supervisor, don't get too carried with your answer and don't elaborate when answering this kind of question.
  2. What interests you about this job? - Think about the specific examples of skills to other positions and how to match your qualifications to the job.
